Chalk
Play by Walt McGough
Directed by Chrissy Richert
Westford Academy Theater Arts, Fall 2022
I was selected to direct the first 2022-2023 show performed in our black box theater. It has been especially rewarding as I was responsible for selecting and pitching the play, and once named as director given autonomy over its production. After negotiating the rights to produce the performances I developed a weekly and daily production schedule, auditioned and selected actors, and put together a talented technical team. Additional responsibilities included blocking, fight choreography, prop selection, guiding lighting and sound design, along with design show posters, shirts, and school advertisements.
Other than the director, school black box productions may only have freshmen and sophomores as cast and crew members. Because this team had limited experience with acting and technical production, I gained experience teaching while be able to enjoy their growth as actors and technicians, and people.
Westford Academy Performing Arts Center
My Role: House Manager, 2022-2023 School Year
As House Manager, I was responsible for managing technical aspects of the 850-seat Performing Arts Center in support of school and community events. My team and I provided sound and lighting expertise for concerts, presentations, and celebrations.
The space includes fly space for professional level theatrical rigging installation, a catwalk, concealed from spectators’ view at the ceiling for access to the theatrical lighting components, and a control booth, located at the back of the space that serves as a hub for all theatrical technology components.
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
Written and directed by Luke Jorgenson
Westford Academy Theater Arts, Spring 2022
My Role: Stage Manager
In my role as stage manager, I needed to develop creative solutions to portray this very magical world of Narnia. We performed this production on our outdoor stage, which is a fun and challenging location that allowed us to incorporate some offstage natural features into the performance space used by the actors.
I was responsible for overseeing all technical aspects of the show, and the design of our version of Narnia. I scheduled the set builds, planned the layout for all the technical properties, designed the set, and called cues for the performances.
Fun Home
Play by Lisa Kron
Directed by Michael Towers
Summer School for the Performing Arts, August 2021
My Role: Stage Manager
I served as the stage manager for this production of Fun Home, overseeing all props, cues, the recording of blocking, maintaining the daily log. Our production of this show allowed the story to tell itself, without the need for a large set or special costuming. My focus was on capturing the art of how the characters were portrayed, without relying on set changes or a large range of props. Our production was small and intimate, and while on a large stage we brought the audience onto the stage with us using stadium seating to help create that intimacy.
It was important to get the right balance in the set design, and to work with the director to realize the correct vision for the show. I cued all performances, using 196 sound and light cues, including 21 light cues for my favorite song from the show, Come to the Fun Home.
Weird Sisters: The Tragedy of Macbeth
Adaptation of Macbeth by Westford Academy Playlab Class
Directed by Maggie Sulka
Massachusetts Educational Theater Guild 2022 Regional High School Theater Festival Award Winner
Westford Academy Theater Arts, Winter / Spring 2022
My Role: Sound Design and Sound Operator, Member of Playlab Class
I was recognized for technical excellence in Atmospheric Design by the Massachusetts Educational Theater Guild
My Playlab classmates and I created this production, using scenes from Shakespeare’s Macbeth, for the Massachusetts Educational Theater Guild high school theater competition. One competition requirement was that the production be no longer than 40 minutes. We used unaltered lines from Macbeth and taking creative liberties in scene selection and character relationships. I’m very proud to have been involved in every part of this extremely collaborative production.
Shakespeare’s plays do not contain stage directions, so we created the storytelling cues needed to achieve the emotion we wanted. Once into production I was responsible for sound design. My goal was to build an entire soundscape to enhance our story, by leaving the audience on edge while experiencing the grim terror that was happening on stage. The sound package was built in QLab, using other audio distortion and sound editing sites to achieve the desire impact.
Spongebob the Musical
Musical by Kyle Jarrow
Directed by Michael Towers
Westford Academy Theater Arts, Fall 2021
My Role: Assistant Stage Manager
This production was a large task, especially while still in the pandemic. The safety requirements led us to be creative about how we rehearsed and prepared the technical aspects of the show. It was very rewarding to be part of production that brought us and our audiences a lot of joy.
The world of Bikini Bottom is such an iconic place. I was responsible for all the prop design and management and took care of all the backstage needs during performances. We needed a lot of wacky props, so we developed a lot of interesting ways to create them. My favorite were the jellyfish, for which we used umbrellas and streamers.
American Idiot
Musical by Michael Mayer and Billie Joe Armstrong
Directed by Michael Towers
Summer School for the Performing Arts, August 2022
My Role: Projection Design and Operator
American Idiot is not like most musicals, and it contains very avant-garde elements that we were able to replicate. My responsibility was for designing and running projections, which served as a motif that started the show, and then returned in a different form toward the show’s end.
The purpose of the projections at the beginning of the show was to set the time period and provide the vibe of the performance. The projections were a collection of early 2000s advertisements, TV show clips, and news clips. At the end of the show the projections play again during the main characters’ interlude to show the passage of time and give a sense of how fast life moves. The projections at the show’s end play at twice the speed and are reversed without audio, while the chorus sings.
